My teacher’s “tough love” approach sucks but it works.

20 years ago, I had a guitar teacher that sucked. Every week, I will always look forward to his lessons but as time passes, It becomes a chore to attend his classes. I will leave his class feeling frustrated and filled with rage. I never understood what he was trying to achieve with me as his student only until I became a teacher myself.

Here is why I get frustrated after his classes

  • It takes almost an hour to travel to his class
  • He does not repeat his instructions, only once
  • He is rarely in the room
  • He tells me to figure out the mistakes on my own
  • He talks a lot about his life as a musician and teacher
  • I felt that I had learnt nothing
  • My anxiety and panic attacks were on the rise

However, 20 years later, I became a teacher and only then did I fully understand what he was trying to tell me. Thanks to him, my passion and drive as a teacher and educator are everlasting, even up till today. Thanks to him, I can bring forward all that he has taught me into practice as a filmmaker who makes brand videos for my clients. Thanks to him, I can educate and create meaningful brand videos that resonate with my client.
